Welcome to the Orthopaedic Surgery Interest Group!

The Orthopaedic Surgery Interest Group (OSIG) serves to provide University of Florida medical students with opportunities to learn about the field of orthopaedics. Every year, we coordinate several activities that allow students to interact with Orthopaedic Surgery and physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) faculty and residents.

For the latest updates: Join the UFCOM Orthopaedic Surgery IG Facebook Page, follow us on Instagram @ufcom.osig, and join our listserv through the OSIG website

What is Orthopaedic Surgery?

Orthopaedic Surgery is a branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

Orthopaedic Surgery Residency & Fellowship

Orthopaedic Surgery residency is a comprehensive five-year training program, including an intern year in surgery. The majority of residents complete a one to two-year fellowship to become more specialized. Current subspecialties include:

  • Hand surgery
  • Shoulder and elbow surgery
  • Total joint reconstruction (arthroplasty)
  • Pediatric orthopaedics
  • Foot and ankle surgery
  • Spine surgery
  • Musculoskeletal oncology
  • Surgical sports medicine
  • Orthopaedic trauma

OSIG Events

OSIG events are announced via email. Previous events that we hope to repeat in the future include:

  • What is Orthopaedic Surgery and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R)? – Learn more about careers in surgical orthopaedics and PM&R, which is often described as a non-operative orthopaedics specialty.
  • Research Night – Learn about opportunities to become involved with research in Orthopaedic Surgery and/or PM&R.
  • Match Process Discussion – Learn from recently matched MS-4s about the process, preparation, and pitfalls of matching into Orthopaedic Surgery.
  • Splinting/Casting/Surgical Workshops – In these workshops, you’ll be able to work one-on-one with current Orthopaedic Surgery residents to learn about and practice various splinting and casting techniques.

Shadowing Opportunities

The UF Department of Orthopaedics welcomes medical students who wish to shadow. This includes clinical, research and operating room shadowing opportunities. To shadow in orthopaedic surgery or PM&R, check out this page. It is also possible to shadow the on-call residents to see trauma patients. Please contact an OSIG officer for this information.

Grand Rounds

These events provide the opportunity to hear presentations from preeminent physicians, some from UF Health and some visiting from other institutions. These events will be announced via Facebook as there are often a limited number of seats available to medical students.
