What is the Purpose of the Event? To educate medical students about basic nutrition concepts and nutrition education strategies that are not provided in the traditional medical school curriculum to better serve future patients. To provide medical students with access to nutrition education from registered dietitians and to learn how and when to refer future patients to seek medical help from registered dietitians and how registered dietitians are part of the health care system.
What is the Benefit to the State, the university, and/or your organization? Currently, doctors are expected to provide advice for patients about weight loss and nutritional strategies to treat certain diseases. Very little practical knowledge is taught in the current medical school curriculum and the information that this group will provide to medical students will help prepare medical students to give accurate and helpful nutritional advice to future patients. All future patients in the state will benefit by having a doctor with more education on nutrition when receiving counseling for nutrition related diseases. This group will also bring more awareness of the importance of nutrition education to the medical students at the University of Florida.
This meeting will also prepare second year medical students for the nutrition-related material on the Step 1 exam.
