Purpose of Trip: ASTRO 55th annual conference for the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology is the largest national meeting of its kind, with over 8000 medical personnel expected to attend. ASTRO is the premier opportunity for students to learn about ground-breaking treatment modalities and patient care in cancer treatment. This meeting changes location each year, and this year it will be in Atlanta, providing UF students a chance to attend the meeting since it is within driving distance. Students from UF who attend this meeting will be able to learn from the best professionals in the field of oncology, and will be able to share the insights and knowledge acquired at the meeting with their peers upon their return. There will be late breaking treatment and outcomes research presented at the meeting, that students will be able to learn from. Hopefully the research will inspire students in attendance to think of novel research projects to perform while pursuing their education at the University of Florida. There will be leadership skills learned by attending a meeting of this magnitude as well. Finally, by allowing UF students to attend this meeting, the students will be able to network and form real connections with medical professionals and medical teams outside of Shands, to foster collaboration and improve patient care.
