What is the Purpose of the Event? MedWars is a 10-15 mile adventure race taking place on April 20th at Fort Gordon in Augusta GA, that incorporates various scenarios along the trail that requires participants to draw from wilderness medical knowledge. The race lasts from 9 am to 6 pm Saturday, with a check in Friday night. Past scenarios include identifying poisonous snakes, splinting broken limbs, and treating heat stroke. The purpose of this event is to actively recollect and apply wilderness medicine knowledge in a very real setting including swamp, some altitude, and water. The actual scenarios this year will not be known until 2 hours before the race.
What is the Benefit to the State, the university, and/or your organization? We are excited to represent the University of Florida College of Medicine amongst the various participating medical schools and create networking opportunities with other Wilderness Medicine interest groups within the SouthEastern United States, specifically those in Florida, as one of our goals is to create a more unified state-wide wilderness medicine learning environment. The knowledge we gain from this trip will also allow us to build interest among the various classes throughout the Fall semester, and make this a focal point of our interest group in the Spring.
