What is the Purpose of the Event? The purpose of the proposed event is to introduce students to laparoscopy. We have worked extensively with the UF Department of Surgery to provide 16 students the opportunity to get “hands on” with laparoscopy surgical equipment in a simulation activity. In addition, a number of UF surgical attendings and residents will be in attendance to interact one on one with students about laparoscopy, the surgical profession, etc. The SSIG executive board intends to make this a catered event in order to facilitate discussion between residents, attendings, and students at the beginning of the event.
What is the Benefit to the State, the university, and/or your organization? The proposed event will benefit students and the UF College of Medicine alike. We intend to get students interested early and often in the surgical profession so they may enter 3rd and 4th year with a refined vision of their career goals. We hope the knowledge acquired in events such as the Laparoscopy Lab will feed back to benefit UFCOM as more interested students will apply to match in surgery.
