Purpose of Trip: Teach WILD IG members WILD skills in an environment with minimal resources to save patients’ lives. We will also be practicing skills we’ve learned from our Fall Lunch events, such as how to properly splint a suspected fracture with the materials such as an extra shirt and sticks in the surrounding area. In order to accomplish this, our members need to be removed from the campus environment and put into a setting which will challenge their skills on how to use minimal resources as life-sustaining tools.

Benefits to the State: there is an increasing demand on rural medicine training and education on how to treat patients in limited resource settings.

Benefits to the University: this trip will help increase enthusiasm and knowledge about treating medical emergencies in a unique setting, challenging students (future medical providers) to utilize their knowledge and creativity to broaden their perspective towards patient care in a limited setting.

Benefits to WILD: this trip will serve as an introduction to responding to and treating environment and medical emergencies. Skills will be tested in a wilderness environment.

Questions/Concerns
-The purpose of this trip is to provide medical education on what to do in an emergency in a remote area outside a medical setting. This is a way to apply what we have learned in our interest group meetings prior to this trip.
-Trip participants will be hiking approximately 2 miles to the camping sites (there are two next to each other). Therefore, participants are required to bring their own sources of food, water, hygiene equipment, and personal camping gear. This will be at a personal expense of roughly $25-100, depending on how many supplies each participant already owns.
-Camping supplies we will bring will include bug spray, large trash bags, first aid kits, and extra water in the event of an injury/to prevent an injury.
-The Backpacking Package rental through UF Outdoor Gear comes with 1 backpack, 1 sleeping bag, 1 sleeping mat, 1 light source of your choice (Lantern or headlamp), 1 crazy creek, 1 stove package of your choice, 1 shelter of your choice (Tent or hammock).
-The estimate for gas mileage was determined from the following 7 personal motor vehicles will be used for this trip. The roundtrip mileage is 160/vehicle.
