Welcome to the Cardiology Interest Group! The purpose of CIG is to promote an interest and understanding of cardiac medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine (UF COM). Cardiology is a specialty branch of internal medicine, but its uniqueness and prevalence in healthcare today deemed it necessary to become its own interest group. Our mission will be accomplished primarily through informative meetings and organized lectures, in which professionals will provide fundamental information related to the field of cardiology. Additionally, CIG activities will provide UF COM students with exposure to cardiology and related fields. This will be accomplished in the form of simulation workshops, panel style meeting with attendings and fellows, and interactive cased-based meetings. Ultimately, participants will gain a better understanding of the steps necessary to become a cardiologist as well as the various subspecialties within the field. CIG will also serve as a medium through which students can have the opportunity to present topics or research relating to the field of cardiology during meetings. We strive to foster a collaborative environment in order to facilitate group discussion and the free exchange of information to achieve a better understanding of the field of cardiology. How to Become a CardiologistAfter completing medical school, students who are interested in Cardiology must first complete a 3 year residency in Internal Medicine at an ACGME-accredited program. After completing a residency in internal medicine, one is then eligible for a fellowship in several areas, including Cardiology. Fellowships for Cardiovascular Disease are 3 years in length, and can be followed up with further fellowships in:
