The Family Medicine Committee is a community of UF students passionate about holistic, patient-centered care and building meaningful, long-term relationships with patients. Our mission is to promote the values of primary care through educational events, mentorship opportunities, service projects, and professional development.

What is Family Medicine?

Family medicine is a medical specialty dedicated to providing continuous, comprehensive healthcare for individuals across the lifespan within the context of family and community. It encompasses all ages, genders, organ systems, and disease processes. 

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, family medicine is a “three-dimensional specialty” integrating knowledge, skill, and process. While knowledge and skills are shared across specialties, the family medicine process is unique. At its center is the patient-physician relationship, with the patient always viewed within the context of their family and community. It is the extent to which this relationship is valued, developed, nurtured, and maintained that distinguishes family medicine from all other specialties.

Family Medicine Residency & Fellowship

After medical school, aspiring family physicians complete a three-year residency at an ACGME-accredited program. Following residency, physicians may pursue additional fellowship training, typically ranging from six months to two years, to gain further specialization.
