Welcome to the Family Medicine Interest Group!

The Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) at the University of Florida College of Medicine has a mission to expose medical students to all of the diverse opportunities within primary care. The FMIG hopes to provide students with the resources to explore family medicine and gain more insight on its overall impact within our health care system. There will also be several opportunities to interact with colleagues and family physicians, who will be able to provide more insight on this specialty.

What is Family Medicine?

Family medicine is a medical specialty that provides ongoing, comprehensive health care for the individual in the context of the family and community, encompassing all ages, genders, organ systems, and disease entities. It is a specialty that undoubtedly influences every patient we, as future professionals, will encounter.

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, “Family medicine is a three-dimensional specialty, incorporating (1) knowledge, (2) skill and (3) process. Although knowledge and skill may be shared with other specialties, the family medicine process is unique. At the center of this process is the patient-physician relationship with the patient viewed in the context of the family. It is the extent to which this relationship is valued, developed, nurtured and maintained that distinguishes family medicine from all other specialties (1992) (2011 COD).”
