Lifesaver Gator Initiative

Welcome to Lifesaver Gator Initiative!

Lifesaver Gator Initiative is a medical student-led initiative promoting education and awareness of emergency life-saving interventions. Our goal is to ensure that members of our community, both within and outside of UFCOM, feel confident and prepared to step up during medical emergencies.

Events

LGI will host hands-on, peer-to-peer teaching events to increase students’ confidence in intervening in emergency medical situations, as well as their ability to teach these skills to others. These will include both two-step CPR and Stop the Bleed training. Likewise, LGI will host public outreach events where students interested in training others can help teach these life-saving skills to members of our community.

CPR

  • Cardiac arrest kills 436,000 Americans every year, with more than 350,000 arrests occurring outside of the hospital.
  • Nearly 1 out of every 6 out of hospital cardiac arrests occurs in a public setting.
  • Immediate bystander CPR can double or triple the chance of survival from an out of hospital cardiac arrest.
    • Only around 40% of people who experience an out of hospital cardiac arrest get the immediate help they need.
    • Only 50% of employees are able to locate an AED at work.

Stop the Bleed

Early responses are similarly critical to the life-saving effectiveness of controlling severe bleeding during emergency situations.

Stop the Bleed is a curriculum and national public awareness campaign that was created to teach simple bleeding control techniques to the public to improve survival from life-threatening bleeding.
