Welcome to the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Committee!
The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Committee serves to provide University of Florida medical students with opportunities to learn about the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Every year, we coordinate several activities that allow students to interact with PRS faculty and residents. For the department’s main page, click here.
What is Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery?
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is a branch of surgery focused on the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. PRS encompasses both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures, addressing congenital anomalies, trauma, burns, and diseases that affect appearance and function.
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency & Fellowship
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery residency is either a comprehensive six-to-seven-year integrated training program, including an intern year in surgery, or a three-year program following an independent pathway. Many residents complete additional fellowship training to specialize further. Current subspecialties include:
- Hand surgery
- Craniofacial surgery
- Microsurgery
- Burn surgery
- Aesthetic (cosmetic) surgery
- Pediatric plastic surgery
- Reconstructive surgery
PRS Events
- PRS events are announced via email. Previous events that we hope to repeat in the future include:
- What is Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery? – Learn more about careers in PRS, including both cosmetic and reconstructive aspects.
- Surgical Workshops – Participate in workshops where you can work one-on-one with current PRS residents and attendings to learn and practice various surgical techniques.
- Socials – A great way to bond with fellow classmates!
Shadowing Opportunities
The UF Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery welcomes medical students who wish to shadow. This includes clinical, research, and operating room shadowing opportunities. To shadow in PRS, you as a medical student can reach out to willing surgeons. To learn more about the 4th year elective, check out this page. Please contact a PRS Committee Co-Chair with any questions.
Grand Rounds/Didactics
These events provide the opportunity to hear presentations from leading physicians, some from UF Health and some visiting from other institutions. There are often a limited number of seats available to medical students.
