Sports Medicine

Welcome to the Sports Medicine Committee!

Faculty Advisor: Ryan Roach, MD

The Sports Medicine Committee serves to provide medical students at the University of Florida College of Medicine with opportunities to learn about the field of sports medicine. Throughout the year, we have several opportunities that allow students to interact with sports medicine attendings, fellows, and residents across both primary care and surgical pathways.

What is Sports Medicine?

Sports medicine is a branch of medicine focused on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and conditions related to physical activity and athletics. Sports medicine physicians treat athletes and physically active people across all ages and skill levels. This field emphasizes restoring physical function, optimizing athletic performance, and allowing individuals to regain the ability to do the activities that bring them joy through both non-operative and operative approaches.

Sports Medicine Training Pathways

Sports medicine can be pursued through several primary specialties, most commonly Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Pediatrics, each followed by a one-year Sports Medicine fellowship. Orthopedic Surgery offers a surgical sports medicine fellowship for those interested in operative management. Common areas of focus include:

  • Surgical sports medicine (ACL, rotator cuff, meniscus)
  • Sideline and event coverage
  • Concussion management
  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound
  • Regenerative medicine
  • Exercise prescription
  • Return-to-sport protocols
  • Sports cardiology and pre-participation screening

Events are announced via our email ListServ. Events we host and hope to continue include:
