Welcome to the Wilderness Medicine Committee!

The Wilderness Medicine Committee is a group of students and faculty who are interested in practicing medicine in difficult environments and are excited to connect with each other and faculty members to explore this field during their medical education. We invite students from all backgrounds, whether seasoned survivalists, adventure enthusiasts, or those who will never leave the city, to come learn with us.

The Wilderness Medicine Committee exists to connect students to the philosophies and practices of providing medical care in austere environments through both educational and experiential opportunities with physicians and professionals.

What is wilderness medicine?

Wilderness medicine is the practice of medicine in environments defined by scarcity, including in true wilderness, disaster zones, conflict zones, and remote communities. This field encompasses both the medical knowledge required to treat conditions common to these areas as well as the survival skills necessary to survive and navigate wilderness conditions while providing care.

Anticipated Opportunities:

  • Invite speakers with experience in providing medical care in austere environments (military, diving, rescue services, etc.)
  • Camping trip/ wilderness medicine simulation
  • Workshops on relevant wilderness medicine skills
  • Campus EMS agency or Gainesville Fire Department mass casualty drills
  • Workshops exposing students to improvised medical devices that can be used. (ie: makeshift splints, slings, stretchers, etc.)
