Welcome to the Ophthalmology Interest Group!
The purpose of OphthoIG is to introduce medical students to the field of ophthalmology and engender interest and excitement. We plan to facilitate as many learning opportunities as possible including but not limited to clinical skills workshops to learn how to use the instruments and tools of ophthalmic practice, a post residency match panel to learn how to prepare for applying for residency, and faculty presentations. We will also provide any helpful resources related to Ophthalmology for medical students. Check out our meetings, presentations, and events!
The Field of Ophthalmology
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine specializing in the anatomy, function, and diseases of the eye. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in eye and vision care, from prescribing glasses and contact lenses to complex and delicate eye surgery. Ophthalmologists also research the causes and cures for eye diseases and vision problems.

- Cornea
- Retina
- Glaucoma
- Pediatrics
- Oculoplastics
- Neuro-ophthalmology
Ophthalmology Residency & Fellowship
Ophthalmology is considered an “early match” specialty due to the early February match. Thus, prospective ophthalmologists must make a decision earlier than medical students interested in other specialties. The field of Ophthalmology utilizes the SF Matching Program and is sponsored by the Association of University Professors in Ophthalmology (AUPO). Ophthalmology residency is 4 years: 1 year of internship/preliminary year, followed by 3 years of ophthalmology specific residency. The length of fellowship ranges from 1-2 years depending on the subspecialty.
